Mayawati, Akhilesh move closer to finalise seat arithmetic for LS polls: Sources
BSP supremo Mayawati and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav Friday moved closer to finalise the seat-sharing formula ahead of the Lok Sabha polls this year.
As per the deal, the two Uttar Pradesh-based political outfits will contest 37 Lok Sabha seats each.
The Samajwadi Party and Congress had collaborated for the assembly election in Uttar Pradesh, but lost to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The saffron party won 73 of the 80 seats.
On the other hand, Mayawati, after ruling out a pre-poll alliance with the Congress, extended support to the party after the recent round of assembly elections in five states to remain the BJP out of power in Madhya Pradesh. The Congress party fell a whisker short of majority in the state.
The BJP and its allies had lost Gorakhpur and Phulpur bypolls to Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav last year.
The above-mentioned meeting took place at Mayawati’s residence. The two leaders will, sources add, meet again.
