In a surprise announcement, the Union Cabinet today the Narendra Modi government approved a 10 per cent reservation for economically backward upper castes in government jobs. A proposal for 10 per cent reservation for economically weaker upper castes was approved by the Union cabinet today. Following the cabinet approval, the Narendra Modi government will now move to ammend the Constitution in order to grant this 10 per cent reservation for economically weaker upper castes.
The timing of the this announcement before the 2019 General Elections could play a big role in favour of the Narendra Modi government.

The move is being seen as a step to consolidate the upper castes.
In a landmark move just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the Narendra Modi-led NDA government has decided to give ten per cent reservation in jobs and higher education for those belonging to the economically backward sections of the general category.
This was approved by the Union Cabinet today. The reservation will be over and above the existing 50 per cent reservation and the government will amend Art 15 and 16 of the Constitution to implement it, reports said
“The reservation will be given to those economically backward poor people who are not availing the benefit of reservation as of now,” news wire agency PTI quoted its sources as saying.
Meanwhile, TV reports said those in the general category whose family income is below Rs 8 lakhs per annum and own less than 5 acres of land.
The move is being seen as a step to consolidate the upper caste votes just ahead of the general elections.
Reacting to the announcement, Congress leader Harish Rawat said that the decision to award ten per cent reservation comes just when the general elections are around the corner and that it wont’t save the BJP-led NDA government.
