Former Lok Sabha Speaker P A Sangma to contest from Tura
NPP national president and former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A Sangma is set to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Tura seat.
Purno A Sangma had represented Tura as many as eight terms. His decision to contest came after his daughter and sitting parliamentarian, Agatha K Sangma decided to back out putting the deteriorating law and order situation and lack of governance as the reasons.
The decision to field Purno was taken at the Central Executive Committee meeting held on Sunday.
In a statement released to the media today, the NPP quoted Agatha Sangma saying that the need of the hour is for Purno A Sangma to come back and “give his valuable contribution in building the nation back.”
Agatha, who was active in the National People’s Party (NPP), headed by her father, since the Meghalaya Assembly elections has also resigned from her primary membership of the Nationalist Congress Party and joined the NPP.
While the NPP is yet to announce its candidate for the Shillong constituency, the NPP, which took a drubbing in the last assembly polls, hopes to use the “PA Sangma magic” in the Garo Hills.
Meghalaya along with other states like Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland will go to polls on April 9
